PD Dr. Thomas Hüsken is a research assosciate in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bayreuth. His work focuses on political anthropology and ethnological organizational research. His main research areas are North Africa and the Middle East.
His doctoral thesis "The Tribe of Experts" deals with the practice of intercultural management in projects of German governmental development cooperation.
Mr. Hüsken has worked on the economy of the Awlad 'Ali Bedouins in the Egyptian-Libyan border area and conducted research on tribal politics and political culture in Egypt and Libya.
Thomas Hüsken is co-founder of the African Borderlands Research Network (ABORNE) and is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Goethe Institute.
In 2021, he was appointed to the scientific advisory board of the "Institute de recherche sur le Maghreb contemporain des Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique". This is the project "La Jeune Recherche en Sciences Humaines et Sociales. Un outil de développement au service de la Libye" (http://irmc-jrshslibye.org).
Current research project
In his current research project "Political Orders in the Making: a comparative study of emerging forms of political organisation from Libya to Northern Mali" he is collaborating with Georg Klute, Dida Badi, and Amal Obeidi.
